Count Gregula’s Crypt visited Massacre Haunted House for a taste of terror on National Haunted House Day. It had been a few years since we last came so we were hex-cited to see what was in store.

Parking is plentiful (when not busy) but it was hard to find the correct lot as the sign on the building said Mind Trap Escape Room. I noticed there was another lot closer to the entrance but I had no idea how to access it. It was OK as the lot we were in was way closer to the exit.

There are even clowns and monsters outside the haunt, line entertainment was great! Giant props and the official Massacre hearse parked outside was a nice touch.

It was super crowded tonight the GA section was packed, I’m so glad we had Fast Passes! The outdoor waiting area was also covered, which was a nice touch.

When you go inside, the very first thing is the photo op where you can get an optional souvenir of your trip to Massacre. Payment was required at that time which was kind of weird as most places have you buy the pics after you are done. The decor is really colorful with lots of spooky lights and props.

The haunt itself was very claustrophobic, lots of dark corridors that seemed to narrow as we went along. Some of the rooms were extremely confusing to navigate, there was a section where we weren’t sure which way to go and Da Count ended up in the security area where all the monitors are. I ended up in a strange unused section. There really should have been an actor to guide us in the correct direction.

Fun things included an authentic experience on a CTA train car with a bum asking for money lol. The spinning blacklight tunnel is always a ghoul time! Many surprises were dotted throughout the haunted house including a very “cozy” experience in the asylum area. I won’t give details as you need to find out for yourself.
The scenery was movie quality and the animatronics were stellar, many towering to the ceiling. From a hellish church scene to the catacombs and an urban wasteland you were brought into each world with terrifying ease. The actors were in your face without getting too close, which was something I really appreciated.

A couple of negative things: I really didn’t appreciate a sheet suddenly lifting up from a wall in one room that hit me in the face and upper body, it felt extremely smothering and unnecessary. There was also an air cannon that blew so hard it was painful when it hit my side.

Make sure you check out the gift shop at the end with cool merch!

Massacre Haunted House definitely gives you your money’s worth, it was one of the longest haunted attractions we have gone through. It is very strenuous so expect to be exhausted at the end, but it’s a satisfying tired. There is also an option to do an escape room or two at Mind Trap, a fun way to decompress after the main event. These attractions are great for teens and young adults to have a horrifyingly great night.
