REVIEW – After 5 at the Field: Halloween Underground MISadventure with Svengoolie

Let’s say you want to take the kids out for a day trip. Dad wants something spooky fun, but Mom wants something educational. What to do?

The Field Museum in Chicago has the solution! This fall, their beloved Underground Adventure exhibit got the Halloween spirit, transforming into an Underground MISadventure, a creepy, crawly, and downright spooky twist on an old favorite – with MeTV’s very own Svengoolie as your video guide.

This past Tuesday evening, October 7th, Da Count and I got the opportunity to come visit the museum at their “After 5 at the Field” event with a very special guest – Svengoolie himself! The fun began around 5:30 pm with Sven’s grand entrance to enthusiastic applause, and was seated on a plush throne, because he is Chicago royalty of course. *wink* After many pics it was time to get in line for the meet and greet where everyone got photos and autographs. We were particularly hex-cited as we haven’t got to meet Svengoolie for a long time!

The line was long but the fans were sociable and we even saw a couple friends that we haven’t seen in quite a while. Before we knew it we were at the front of the line where Svengoolie’s long time assistant Jim Roche was doing line control and basically serving as the “opening act” haha. We always love seeing Jim! Svengoolie was a pleasure to meet as usual, catching up on how we’ve all been. We got our pix and autograph and then we finally got to go on our MISadventure!

The fun began in a makeshift office where a video featuring our ol’ pal Sven explaining that strange things are happening underground and we need to investigate. As we went down we were “shrunk” to 1/100th of our actual size—smaller than a penny!!! This exhibit took us throughout tunnels in the soil where bugs, worms and small animals are giant size. There were plenty of fun photo ops and lots of haunted surprises. The lighting was creepy with the addition of spooky animatronics that gave it a real Halloween feel. We had so much fun down there we stayed too long and didn’t get a chance to see the rest of the museum. Oh well! We had an incredible time and hopefully you will too.
